What you will set up

OpenAI dots are always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Getting started means: confirm you are on an eligible plan, create the first dot where OpenAI allows creation (desktop app or desktop web), connect the apps you want, and learn where approvals and Activity View live. Availability

OpenAI is rolling out dots to Pro users in eligible markets, Business Premium across supported regions, and Enterprise (including Edu and Healthcare) as an admin-enabled beta. Access may take several days. For markets, first-month quota, and plan gates, read eligibility and pricing — and re-check Help, because rollouts move.

Create your first dot

Create your dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or in ChatGPT on desktop web. Follow onboarding: name it, pick a character or pet, connect apps, and let it introduce itself. After setup, you can message it in the ChatGPT mobile app when mobile access is available. Help states you cannot currently create a dot on mobile, and dots are not supported on mobile web.

• Default handle pattern: @yourname-dot; naming updates the handle.
• Open the profile to review In progress, Scheduled, and Completed work, and to open the dot’s computer.
• Prefer desktop when connecting messaging channels such as Slack or texting.

Channels and connected apps

Message or call dots in ChatGPT on desktop, web, and mobile. They can also reach you in Slack and Teams; texting is described as a limited beta where available. Connected apps feed tasks and proactive research. Manage plugins from the dot’s Customize → Plugins path (shared ChatGPT settings). Disconnecting an app stops new sharing; memories already formed may remain until you reset the dot — details in Help.

Permissions default read-only; sensitive actions need approval

When you connect apps, treat access as deliberate. OpenAI describes proactive / background research as using read-only tools on connected sources — it can gather information and form notes, but it is not free to send messages, change app content, or drive your browser or computer on its own. Consequential steps (sends, purchases, deletes, security-sensitive changes) go through approvals, Custom Rules, and Auto-review. Cloud computer vs local computer

Every dot has its own cloud computer and browser. You can open that computer to inspect work. Access to your local computer is optional and starts turned off. Enable it only from the ChatGPT desktop app on that machine if you need local files, local skills, or a local browser fallback. Safety defaults and Auto-review are summarized on safety.
